Well, today is the end of Christmas – the 12th day, as it were. It’s also know as Three Kings Day, commemorating the arrival of the star following magi at the side of the baby Jesus. Makes you sort of wonder why it’s not called Four Kings day doesn’t it?

Anyone, for most of us Christmas is a thing of long ago. Most of the lights are down, the bows and ribbon disposed of and the tree lays out on the curb for the city recycling program ( or stored neatly in the closet for next year!). But take a quick moment to remember how following that star affected those dudes, and remember that when we stick with that Christ guy we also become kings – fellow heirs to his throne. That’s royally cool stuff.

16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.Romans 8:16-17New American Standard Bible (NASB)

I am so stoked today I can’t hardly stand it. As most of you know, I am a huge WVU fan. And West Virginia ended up the Orange Bowl last night with a pretty impressive victory over the Clemson Tigers. My excitement is to such an extend that I could barely sleep last night and I can’t hardly stop myself from posting on Facebook!!!

Pretty ridiculous really, That much joy from watching 20 year old kids play a game? Especially when you consider that all I did was sit on my couch in my climate controlled room watching the game on my High Definition big screen TV. I didn’t practice, I didn’t call a play, I didn’t run a play. All I did was claim that team as my own and cheer away – and believe. (Although, I can say I was pretty nervous in the first quarter!)

And yet, the joy overflows this morning! I wonder if it will last past the time I walk through the office doors!

Wow, sort of reminds me of something else. Something else that I did absolutely nothing to attain, except to believe. Something that was done for me, for free. Something I didn’t ask for, but has been given.

9-11Now that we are set right with God by means of this sacrificial death, the consummate blood sacrifice, there is no longer a question of being at odds with God in any way. If, when we were at our worst, we were put on friendly terms with God by the sacrificial death of his Son, now that we’re at our best, just think of how our lives will expand and deepen by means of his resurrection life! Now that we have actually received this amazing friendship with God, we are no longer content to simply say it in plodding prose. We sing and shout our praises to God through Jesus, the Messiah! (Romans 5:9-11 MSG)

Double Joy! Maybe even Triple Joy!

And this joy is unstoppable.

So in reality the effects of this game will wear off – and the old Mountaineers will lose again sometime in the future(maybe), but the true joy that comes from the Messiah, the Christ is there forever.

Pretty sweet uh!

18-21The birth of Jesus Christ happened like this. When Mary was engaged to Joseph, just before their marriage, she was discovered to be pregnant—by the Holy Spirit. Whereupon Joseph, her future husband, who was a good man and did not want to see her disgraced, planned to break off the engagement quietly. But while he was turning the matter over in his mind an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife! What she has conceived is conceived through the Holy Spirit, and she will give birth to a son, whom you will call Jesus (‘the Saviour’) for it is he who will save his people from their sins.”

22-23 All this happened to fulfil what the Lord had said through the prophet—‘Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’. (“Immanuel” means “God with us.”)

24-25When Joseph woke up he did what the angel had told him. He married Mary, but had no intercourse with her until she had given birth to a son. Then he gave him the name Jesus.Matthew 1:18-24 J.B. Phillips New Testament (PHILLIPS)

Wow, I can’t believe it’s the day before the night before the night before the night before the night before Christmas. It is nearly upon us! And to be quite honest, I still have tons of shopping to do – which is actually unusual for me. Oh well, I think I will join the rest of the men out buying vacuum cleaners and whatever Christmas sweater or jewelry they can find on Christmas Eve. Amy is going to love this year!

It’s just been one of those years – where the business of living life has overcome my ability to prepare for important events that lie ahead. Or maybe I a just have procrastinated.

Anyway, I am sure you are also finding some last minutes things to scramble for, they may not be as large of scale as the scramble that lies ahead of me. And really some of that hustle is part of the fun of celebrating Christmas. I mean who doesn’t love getting in all that last-minute traffic on Christmas Eve?

But let’s not let that happen to our spirits. Keep that in the forefront and guard that part of your life with extreme prejudice.

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 New International Version (NIV)

Here we go, into the last weekend before the last weekend before Christmas. The mad rush that is the Christmas season is really starting to pick up. Many students are heading into the dreadful week of finals and the stores are beginning to push their “almost last-minute” Christmas sales. As for me, I still need to get started.

I guess I actually got started last night, when I put up the Christmas tree, but boy it looks drab this morning.

It’s missing something! It appears to be in dire need of a transformation. And you know I love transformations, so I can’t wait to share what this little tree will look like once the master gets her hands on it this weekend. (I am sure you will be waiting with much anxiety all weekend to find out what this guy will look like on Monday morning!)

But I digress, on this Friday, as you head into the weekend that I am sure is full of lots of great Holiday fun, take a moment to remember that without the gift we have been given we are drab like this artificial tree. Go throughout the weekend focusing on the fact that “unto us a child is born! and to us a son is given! (Isaiah 9:6)” That’s no myth. It’s real life changing stuff. To US! Wow! That should bring a smile to your face all weekend, no matter where you park your car, nor how long the lines are! And maybe those words will bring a song to your lips!

Hey, This is a pretty cool day today. Today is Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day! Head on over to your local TARDIS or jump in the DeLorean, it’s time to go back in time! Or maybe you want to go forward in time? Which would it be for you?

Given this time of year, and some of the thoughts I have had this week, if I could go back in time today, I would head back to a pasture 2000 years ago.

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. Luke 2 NIV

I can’t imagine what those dudes were thinking. All of the sudden an angel appears and reveals the greatest message ever given. Wow, I would love to see that! Can you imagine?

So today, lets all find our inner Marty McFly or go find the Doctor and spend some time traveling, or at least pretending to travel, through time!

And as you go, sing “Glory to God in the highest” just like those angels!

I had read this passage so many times in the past, but yesterday it seemed these words were a lot closer to home than before. No, I did not have an angel talk to me. And no, I am not pregnant!. But I do struggle with submitting myself to the commands and directives of the creator of the world. I do struggle hearing those commands and saying “sure if that is what you want!”

But, that’s exactly what that young girl, Mary did.

38And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. Luke 1:38 English Standard Version (ESV)

Could you imagine if we actually responded that way to the commands of our Lord? I believe we would see incredible things happening! Her response, is quite an example. Might be worth following that example today?

Let it be to me.

Sometimes I come up with original content. Other times I come up with ‘borrowed’ content. It’s probably a great debate about which one makes it better. Today as yesterday will be borrowed.

I have tried to read more this month and I found some great reading plans at the YouVersion Bible site. I have actually been reading two different plans, one that is discussing a Christmas carol a day, and the other that is just discussed different areas surrounded the birth of the Christ. Yesterday there was a question posed at the end of the both readings and interestingly enough they were both very similar. One asked this

How has your life been a light to those around you? Make a point to be light during this season.

and the other this

What one thing could you change to give those around you a foretaste of God’s Kingdom of peace?

Great questions, how would you answer them?

14-16“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16The Message (MSG)
