Who Is It About

June 10th, 2010

Yesterday, I was in the all day affair that I was flown up here for when I was asked my opinion about a direction or standard.  I replied with the acutal directional statement.  Its one that I believe in, but its still early in development.  A few minutes after this one of my coworkers in the room, responded provided her thoughts on this standards, and ripping it to shreds with a lot of emotion and frustration.

As she was going through her “rant”, I dropped in to a dream sequence.  I saw myself.  I thought of the way I had handle situations like this in the past.  I thought about my response to her at this moment, which deep in side was probably a kin to reaching across the table and doing bodily harm! However, I also thought about wy I would want to do that, the value, the message, and how I could use this to show the transformation that I strive for everyday, and then as she finished up I thought about Colossians 3:7

7You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.

The comments were quickly deferred to a a more appropriate setting to address by another co worker, who beat me to the punch at saying that, and the meeting moved on.  However, her frustration with the direction continued the rest of the day.  And so, I continued to think about how to address this, and I realized that my job was not to defend myself, and to prove that I was correct.  It’s not about me.   My job is to make her better.  And that is what I will strive to do.

What about you, what about your conflicts.  Who is it about?

12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Col 3 (NIV)

This is Love Calling

May 24th, 2010

Its Monday! and this is love calling.  It’s the start of another work week, which means its another chance to get into the world and impact people.  Another chance to renew your mind, refresh your spirit, put the past behind you and move forward.

Take courage from Paul’s prayer for the Colossians

9For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully 12giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. 13For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:9-14 (New International Version)

This is love calling , out to the broken…

You may be knocked down, but you not out forever.  Live up to the calling today!

Seasoned with Salt

May 21st, 2010

Woo hoo! Its Friday, and I can’t be more happy about that.  I have a day with lots of talking in front of me  so I found these words to be helpful to me today.  Hopefully you find them a little motivating as well.

6Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.  Colossians 4:6 (New International Version)

Be salty and full of grace!

Intoxicating

May 12th, 2010

This place is intoxicating – if you let it.  Its really strange, so much luxury, so much comfort, so much “playing”.  It even smells luxurious.  The amount of temptations are actually overwhelming.  Its really the most interesting, but yet the most bewildering place.  Yes I am still talking about Vegas.  I mean, even this morning while I was running I saw a truck with a billboard on it that proclaimed that there were ladies here that wanted to meet me!  I couldn’t believe it.  Those ladies really want to meet me!  I didn’t call them….

Anyway, the thing I noticed is the the temptation is so blantantly obvious that its seems that you are either going to jump right in with both feet or you can very easily guard yourself.  The extremeness of it is so different then the real world – where you have to be on guard all the time.  And that is my message for all you unfornunate souls who are not spending two more days in Vegas.  Be on guard.  Be strong and show others the greatness of the living a life of hope.

6So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.  Colossians 2:6-7 (New International Version)

Oh by the way, Bally’s still has the sign up.   hm.. …Buffet of buffets,.. whatever.

Flat Water Ahead?

April 13th, 2010

Well, I broke down and did it on Saturday night.  I bought a boat!  Well, a canoe.  A nice inexpensive 14′.  I did it for Alex.  He has been asking for a canoe or kayak for a few years. And some recent thoughts and events encouraged me to move forward.

Remember that one of my goals for 2010 was to become obsessed – obsessed with God and to let him impact my life.  So with that in mind, I was recently reminded about the shortness of life and the short amount of time our children are in our homes.  That reminded me of this picture.

Those 4 men are my fathers.  Well, the baby is my actual father, but the other 3 are his father and his father and his father.  So that’s 4 generations back in the history of my family.  I would be the fifth and my sons the sixth standing on the right.  I starting thinking how little I really know about the two men on the left.  I know their names, their wife’s and their children’s names, and even their birth and death dates.  I have even stood at the foot of their graves.  But the only thing I really know about them exists through what I know about my grandfather and my father.  I don’t know how they lived each day, but the overall impact of their choices and decisions for sure have had impact on me.  So then I look forward and I think about 4 generations ahead and what they will write on their iMinds ( that’s an futuristic Apple product that just connects directly to your brain!) about their grandparents?

Deep stuff, so what does that have to do with a boat? Everything!

I figure that my legacy for those potential future generation is set in the way I approach every single day.  I don’t have huge plans of grandeur.  But I think that each day, I can live in a way that when the “complete body of work” is examined, it will be something that points one direction – Heaven.

I hope this boat can me an instrument to help.  For you it may be golf clubs, the kitchen, or long drives.  But I am sure there are things in your life that you can use as opportunities to share the gifts we have been given.  Of course that’s on top of living each and every day in a way that brings glory to our Lord and Savior.

16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:16-17 (New International Version)

18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, Deuteronomy 11:18-20 (New International Version)

So here’s to flat water, good paddling, great conversations and trips that bring us all closer to our God.
