Constantly Challenging Ourselves

May 7th, 2012

I am not sure even where I found this now, but this is really really true.

A healthy product company is, confusingly, one at odds with itself. There is a healthy part which is attempting to normalize and to create predictability, and there needs to be another part that is tasked with building something new that is going to disrupt and eventually destroy that normality.
But this also should be true in our individual minds and bodies as well.  Too often we let the normalizing part take the lead and then we are in what is so lovingly call a rut.
Let us be at odds with ourselves and constantly challenge the predictable part with things that are better.

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.  Colossians 3:1-13

Blessings

March 28th, 2012

A few days ago, I stumbled upon on old post that I wrote about blessings.  Well really the post just shared a video that brought the idea of blessings home.  You should go back and watch it again. ( or here’s the link to the video itself).

Anyway, re-watching that video has made me take account of all the things I have to be thankful for, including, but not limited to ( and not in any particular order of thankfulness):

Water, Amy, my health, the boys, having a house, having stuff in my house, having tons of clothes to wear, friends( lots of them, or at least they tell me they are !), followers, knowledge, transportation, freedom, fingers, the ability to type….

The list just goes on and on.

It makes it hard to be negative or to be really unhappy with things with so many good things out there. ( that is not to say, there is not always things that can be made better or improved!)  But really, take a moment today , count up those blessings and in your thankfulness – bless others.

15-17Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way. Colossians 3:15-17The Message (MSG)

A Borrowed Thought

March 16th, 2012

I have to admit, my mind is a little distracted today, and even though it’s Lip’s Appreciation Day, my lips are sort of silent.  ( But it does make me wonder how one would celebrate Lip’s Appreciation Day?)

And so, this morning, just a simple verse pulled from the verse of the day on Bible Gateway’s front page. The words reminded me of someone, and seemed right to share with you.

12-14So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it. Colossians 3:12 The Message (MSG)

The Most

January 20th, 2012

Earlier this week, Amy’s day calendar, which we both get lots of laughs and motivation from, contained this quote:

Make the most of yourself….. for that is all there is of you! – Ralph Waldo Emerson

I like it.  How about you?

Reminds me of two verses I was also taught to teach that we should give all we have, since we are doing it for Him.

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God! 1 Corinthians 10:31

Give what you got!

Little Drummer Boy

December 16th, 2011

There is one tradition Christmas carol that for the last several years I have pretty much despised.  And that is the Little Drummer Boy.  My analytical brain could not handle this crazy addition to the Christmas Story.  I mean, who is this kid, and where in the world did he come from.  And why is he waking the baby playing that blasted drum?

However, last year, I started thinking about this song a little differently, and even more so this year.  Now, let me stop and say that it’s not that I have developed an affection for it, but I have been able to begin to tolerate it.  I guess it’s not really about a made up drummer boy, and his drum.  It’s really a lesson about giving all you have to the Savior of the world. ( I know many of you are saying Duh , where have you been!)

As the Holiday approaches very rapidly, I am sure you will hear many renditions of this number on the internet or over the air waves.  As you do remember these two little bits of wisdom from the scriptures.

17And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17 New International Version (NIV)

10Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.  Ecclesiastes 9:10 New International Version (NIV)
