Random Friday Thoughts

May 18th, 2012

It’s Friday, and because of that, here are some disjointed Friday like thoughts to get you started on the weekend.

  • This is a funny but encouraging piece of motivation this morning

    “Be like a postage stamp, stick to one thing until you get there.” – Josh Billings

  • As you think about solving issues, and facing whatever is holding you back, consider these words of the great King David

    in God I trust and am not afraid.
    What can man do to me?  Psalm 56:11

Be Strong and Take Heart

May 14th, 2012

It’s the beginning of the week.  What fears, anxieties and apprehensions are you facing this week that are weighing you down? As you expose them, think about these promises from Psalm 27 (NIV)

1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?

7Hear my voice when I call, Lord;
be merciful to me and answer me.

14 Wait for the Lord;
be strong and take heart
and wait for the Lord.

Be Strong, take heart, and let go of those fears and anxieties that control you.

Another Tough Guy

April 25th, 2012

Last week I mentioned the Nike guy who is running and biking across the country for a better world. That dude was a monster. So this week I introduce another gentleman doing a similar thing – Jamie Summerlin, from the homeland – West Virginia! He is running from Oregon to Annapolis in 100 days to raise awareness of wounded warriors.

He may not be moving as fast as Jason Lester but his endurance, drive and determination are equally remarkable.

For instance yesterday he ran 30 miles in 6 hours and 8 mins, and I think he will be doing something similar today.  That’s just something to think about as you press on through the day.  This guys are out working it, and you can too!

Rise and Grind!

32 It is God who arms me with strength
   and keeps my way secure.
33 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;
   he causes me to stand on the heights.   Psalm 18:32-33 New International Version (NIV)

Refuge

April 23rd, 2012

I simple thought for a simple Monday:

Keep me safe, my God,
for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
apart from you I have no good thing.” (Psalm 16:1, 2 NIV)

Friday the 13th

April 13th, 2012

Hey all you Paraskevidekatriaphobics out there.  I suppose most of you will be staying home today, locked inside for security.  Yep, Friday the 13th is upon is! But really, whats the deal with Friday the 13th and why are we taught from a young age that this is a day to fear?

Well it seems that this is the convergence of two traditional unlucky things!

UNLUCKY FRIDAY + UNLUCKY 13 = UNLUCKIER FRIDAY

I guess we have always heard that 13 is an unlucky number for some reason.  But I didn’t realize Friday was given that same name.  But check out this story I discovered while doing a little bit of research

Legend has it: Never change your bed on Friday; it will bring bad dreams. If you cut your nails on Friday, you cut them for sorrow. Don’t start a trip on Friday or you will encounter misfortune. Ships that set sail on a Friday will have bad luck, as in the tale of H.M.S. Friday. One hundred years ago, the British government sought to quell the longstanding superstition among seamen that setting sail on Fridays was unlucky. A special ship was commissioned and given the name “H.M.S. Friday.” They laid her keel on a Friday, launched her on a Friday, selected her crew on a Friday, and hired a man named Jim Friday to be her captain. To top it off, H.M.S. Friday embarked on her maiden voyage on a Friday — and was never seen or heard from again From : http://urbanlegends.about.com/cs/historical/a/friday_the_13th_3.htm

So fun! ( well I guess not for those on the Friday!)

As I was reading some history, it seemed that a lot of this talk about Friday and 13 have a long history in humanity, and that when Christianity spread it change them even more.  It seems to me however, that the presence of the Christ would not have demonized these things, but set people free from the fear of them!

The LORD is my light and my salvation–whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life–of whom shall I be afraid?  Ps 27:1

or what about this bit of truth

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8

Seriously, if God if for us, can a day of the week and a number conspire against us?

Enjoy the great day! ( and leave the salt at home!)
